Mai Tie Instructions:

Warning:

Please use care when carrying your baby in any carrier or sling. As with all carriers, your baby is not fastened in. Be sure to support baby while bending or stooping and take care not to run your baby into anything.

In addition, alway check all seams before use for wear and damage. Carrier should be replaced immediately if a seam rips or the fabric wears thin.

Carrier is not a toy. Never leave baby with carrier unattended. Long straps could pose strangulation hazzard.

Wild Rose's Garden is happy to help its customers learn how to use their carriers, but assumes no liability for their use, misuse, breeches of common sense, or any injuries that may result from our carriers.

Tips:

When learning how to put on a sling, use a doll or a well-rested and well-fed baby who is in a good mood. Review the instructions for the carrying position you'd like to use. Then put the baby in the Mai Tie and start moving. Keep hold of your baby with one hand, adjust with the other, and keep moving! Even good natured babies have limited patience and the movement will help keep them calm.

It may take a few tries to get used to and comfortable with the carrier. An older baby, not used to being carried may especially need time to adjust. Use it for short periods of time at first and lengthen them gradually. This will also help you build muscle.

Although it is completely possible and reasonable to tie baby on without help, practicing with a partner may make the first tries easier and safer. It is also a good idea to do it over a soft surface such as a bed, or kneeling on a carpet.

Front Carry:

1. To start, tie the carrier on your waist like you would an apron, using the two short straps.
2.Hold your baby chest to chest and wrap his legs around your waist. Alternatively, you can tuck his legs up under him like a frog. This step can be done standing or by sitting in a chair and placing baby on your lap.
3. Pull the carrier up around your baby and hold your baby with one hand on the outside of the carrier. Use your other hand to toss the straps over your shoulders.
4.Grab the straps behind your back and cross them. Be sure to pull them tight, there may be extra fabric that baby is sitting on. A loose carrier, not only poses safety hazards, but also puts extra strain on your back.
5. Bring the straps around to your front, taking care to tuck them under baby's legs.
6.Tie the straps under baby's bottom.
7.If you have a young baby who needs more support to remain upright, you can tie the straps behind his back instead.

Hip Carry:

1. Tie waist straps around your waist with body of carrier hanging to one side.
2. Hold baby on your hip.
3. Pull the body of the carrier up around baby's back, and place the front shoulder strap over your far shoulder, hanging to the back.
4. Grab the back shoulder strap and bring it around your back...
5. ...and up over the far shoulder, coming to the front.
6. Be sure to pull both straps tight.
7. Tie under baby's bottom.
8.If you have a young baby who needs more support to remain upright, you can tie the straps behind his back instead.

Back Carry using Sofa or Chair:

1. Lay carrier flat against a sofa or chair. There is about 2 inches of carrier on the seat of the sofa - the rest is upright.
2.Place your baby in a seated position on top of the carrier.
3. Sit down in front of your baby and wrap his legs around your waist. Tie the waist straps nice and tight making sure babies legs will hang outside the staps. Make sure you are leaving your baby a "seat."
4. Bring the shoulder straps up over baby's shoulders and over your own shoulders.
5. Pull should straps nice and tight to lever baby up onto your back.
6. Cross the straps in front and stand up, tying them under baby's bottom behind you. Be sure to pull the carrier nice and snug.

Alternate step 6a: Bring the straps straight down and stand up. Tie in back, without crossing in front.

Alternate step 6b: If you are small, bring the straps straight down and stand up. Cross the straps in back under baby, and bring around front under baby's legs and tie.

Back Carry without a Chair Version A:

1. Tie the carrier around your waist, hanging down in back.
2. Swing baby onto your back and lean over so baby rests on your back.
3. Then pull the body of the carrier up, and the straps over your shoulders.
4. Continue with Back Carry instructions above #5.

Back Carry without a Chair Version B:

1. Wrap the carrier around baby's shoulders with shoulder straps hanging in front like a cape.
2. Swing baby and carrier onto your back, ducking your head between baby and the shoulder straps so the straps end up over your shoulders.
3. While leaning over so baby rests on your back, tie the waist straps. (You can hold both loose shoulder straps in one hand to help contain a wiggley baby).
4. Continue with Back Carry instructions above #5.

High Back Carry:

1. Tie the waist straps under your armpits, above your breasts.
2. Hoist baby over your head.
3. Lower baby onto your upper back, leaning forward to keep baby safe. The first few times you do this, kneel on the ground to make yourself more stable.
4. Find shoulder straps and pull them up over baby.
5. Bring shoulder straps over your shoulders, and slowly stand up, sliding baby down into the pocket of the carrier.
6. Bring the straps straight down and under baby's legs.
7. Cross straps under baby's bottom.
8. Bring them up to the front again and tie above the first knot.

Getting Baby Down from Back Carry:

1. To get baby down, lean forward as you untie the knots and unwind the straps.
2. Holding the straps with one hand, reach the other hand around your back and hold onto baby.
3. Slide baby around to your side and into your arms.

Fact: It is possible to get a sleeping baby off of your back without help and not wake baby.
